The question of how to attempt to appeal to this constituency is a tough one.

I think the first step is to establish the reality of the situation:

(1) Abortion will always be freely available to the vast majority of the American public, even if Roe vs. Wade is overturned; and

(2) Gays will continue to enjoy greater equality in our society, regardless of what measures a republican President proposes.

Given these two facts, it is clear that the Republican party is just pandering to the devout Christian constituency. They know damned well that they aren't going to make abortion illegal, or force gays back into the closet ... they are just cynically preying upon these peoples beliefs.

That leaves the Democratic party with two options:

(1) Pander to this constituency, just as the Republicans do; or

(2) Try to get across to this constituency that the Republicans aren't really doing anything to help them, and are just using them for political purposes.

The first alternative is objectionable to most democrats, imo, so that leaves us with the second.
