Klaus Stohrs' comments are just in the NYT's versions and my comments on his comments are at recombinomics.com My comments on Peiris' comments are at recombinomics.com I am getting media calls and they are suprised that my numbers come from WHO numbers (I just multipled the current case fatality rate and the WHO projection of infections in 1/4 to 1/3 of the world's population). The key difference between WHO and me is the mechanism for gaining human to human transmission, which can be acheived without losing virulence if recombination is used to acquire human recptor binding seqeunces. Swapping (reassortment) H5 for H3 or H1 would acheive human to human transmission, but there would be no pandemic because humans have antibodies to H3 and H1. recombinomics.com
