STORES HIRING MORE TEMPS
Retailers are hiring at least an extra 800,000 people to chip in during the holidays, up from 635,900 in 2002, industry data show. "We're predicting hiring growth in retail services compared to last holiday season," said John Challenger, CEO of outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas. The applicant pool is growing more diverse. In addition to college students, stores are hearing from retirees, housewives and aspiring moonlighters. Among the likeliest to get hired: retailers' happiest customers, who already know a company's products and thus require less training.
