Does this mean it is great in December and useless in January? Or did you mean past 12 mo by "current year"?

Undecided. It's very unlikely to be the past 12 months, and instead settle on a specific number of past messages, like 200k or thereabouts. Since that one gets used frequently, I can't let it get too large. And the current size of over 1MM messages is a bit too large.
