WS. When we invaded iraq i expected casualties under 1000 to win the war. I also expected to find Wmds. While i didnt expect the flowers scenario, i did expect happy kurds, positive shiaa and resigned sunnis. What we got was happy kurds, manipulative shiaa and rebellious sunnis fueled by foreign money and foreign terrorists whose entry into iraq we were not able to control. So here we are now. You have been more right about things on the ground than I have been. So what should US policy be from this point on? I have made no secret about my view supporting the recent attack on the insurgents in falujah and elsewhere and continuing along to the elections. But post election my view is that if the uprising hasnt come under some degree of control, we should declare victory (elimination of saddam plus elections plus the november route of the terrorists in falujah), and start to move our troops out of harms way allowing for iraqi--govt, kurds, even al saders militia--- to defend the country against the baathists and terrorists. With this I would pull US forces back to more secure defensible locations and i would also state an end date when all US troops will leave iraq. This should be a wake up call for iraqis to self defend. If a united iraq became impossible after all of this, i would not be unhappy with the three state solution. I hope for the united iraq scenario but i am enough of a realist to accept that its not much better than a 50/50 shot. I think there are some elements here we actually will agree on. Without going over the history of our involvement(we know our positions after arguing for a couple of years), do you think any of this makes any sense given where we find ourselves today. And if not, what would you have us do starting today? Mike
