Gwynne Dyer wrote an article gwynnedyer.net wondering whether bubonic plague wasn't in fact the chicken flu which was first reported in Asia in 1998 [I think it was]. Or maybe I have the years a bit muddled. I've been watching this for a few years now and the trends are not good. In two years, we have made no progress as far as I can tell and can't even manage boring old standard flu and production of antivirals.

The world should be awash in Tamiflu or whatever chemistry best protects us. Everyone should have masks and goggles at the ready. Plans to avoid crowds should be underway. Vaccines should be in houses, ready for self-administration.

Sars was like a little warning shot across the bows.

The H5N1 threat is gathering, like Hitler in the 1930s. At least we have peace in our time, for now. Now, where the heck is Al Qaeda - everyone take their shoes off at the airport, then we'll be safe?
