Anyone care to interpret this chart for me?:

finance.yahoo.com

Glued to 19 1/2 all day--final volume (Scottrade) 17,915,000.

A few considerations: 18 million shares short, lots of open interest on Dec and Jan 20 options (both pu ts and calls), even more on the Dec 17.5 calls.

Is there some market technical (not chartreading) explanation for the lack of intraday volatility? The closing price was also within pennies of yesterday's afterhours close. How could "the market" instantly assimilate all the new information from the earnings release, know the extraneous factors that would emerge the next day (oil, rally), and arrive at the "correct" price? Or, given the positions in the stock (short interest, low float, options hedg ing) were there some technical constraints to today's trading?

By the way, I don't mean to suggest a conspiracy, or do I give any significance to the fact that today's volume was very close to the likely short interest.
