China publicizes number of gay men for the 1st time www.chinaview.cn 2004-12-02 10:13:38 BEIJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- There are estimated 5 to 10 million gay men in China that represent 2 to 4 percent of the country's male population. Their AIDS infection ratio is 1.35 percent. This is the first time China has issued any statement dealing with the number of gay men and their AIDS infection ratio, China Radio International reported on Wednesday. The Ministry of Health revealed in the survey that the gay men's AIDS infection ratio is 1.35 percent. The figure is slightly lower than intravenous drug users, ranking second among high-risk AIDS groups. A health monitoring project for this special group has been established over the last few years, since gay men are more likely to spread AIDS due to multiple sex partners and a low use rate of condoms. news.xinhuanet.com
