Hasn't he heard of bubonic plague? Look what that did.

Anyway, even if there has not been in human experience a catastrophic infection, that doesn't mean there isn't going to be one.

But how ignorant is he? Maybe he hasn't heard of the 1918 catastrophic flu. Or maybe he figures that we are all going to die anyway, so what the heck if a billion people die young. Okay, maybe it won't be 1 billion and it'll only be 100 million.

100 million is neither here nor there. It would be richly ironical if Longini is one of them. I guess he figures he'll be exempt. Dr Urbani wasn't immune to sars and I doubt Longini or the other bloke are immune to H5N1.
