Smith Barney sees positive E&P reserve revisions
Wed Dec 1, 2004 09:05 AM ET
NEW YORK, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Smith Barney said on Wednesday it expects numerous positive reserve revisions from oil and gas exploration and production companies at the end of the year on much higher commodity prices.

"Our analysis suggests that year-end reserve revisions track the changes in year-end commodity prices," said Smith Barney analyst Gil Yang. "Higher commodity prices improve the economic recoverability of older wells."

According to Smith Barney, XTO Energy Inc. (XTO.N: Quote, Profile, Research) is the most likely candidate to make a positive reserve revision, as there is a strong correlation between the company's reserves and price changes.

Yang said XTO's revisions in 2004 could add as much as 35 percentage points to reserve replacement.
