I don't disagree with that. What I was pointing out was that BECAUSE most retailers grow so fast, sales generally grow anyway, and in order to judge performance and profitability, people also look at same store sales.

The metric makes sense to me only in context of other numbers. Those other numbers are seldom given.

If you look at a research report on a retailer, you find more numbers than you would probably every want to see. Management follows certain disclosure guidelines in their quarterly statements. That is not the only way they diffuse information, though.

Regardless of their tainted reputation, the best outlet for such info is still analyst reports. They are the ones who sit down with management and ask (hopefully intelligent) questions, and who then get some junior in the planning department to e-mail them all the data he asks about...
