There is a lot of judgment exercised in translation. I am right now reading a Canadian museological publication in English and French, and I am amazed at the latitude with which the translations have been made, in many lines to the point of paraphrasis, rather than strict translation. Certainly, if I were translating, I would stay much closer to the original, in either direction. There are a lot of translations of classics, and reputations wax or wane in different periods. I am not sure which is the current most favored translation. I will look around and see if I can glean it.......
