Ukraine Friday quick readaround
By King
scsuscholars.com

I won't be back for about four hours, so here's what to read in the meantime with a couple of quick comments (before taking Littlest to school):

Great Yushchenko op-ed in the Journal. Money graf in my view:
Currently the outgoing regime is menacing Europe with the threat of separatism and the dissolution of Ukraine. I state with full responsibility for my words: This is a fictional, artificial threat. It does not exist. The people of Ukraine recognize that an economically prosperous nation-state tolerant of its bilingualism and multiethnic society, and respectful of all religious confessions, is Ukraine's strength and not her weakness.

Plenty more there, RTWT.

Foreign Notes says the parliament may have passed price controls. I can understand this. The strike should have led to a decrease in the supply of goods. This would lead shopkeepers who don't know when more goods will come to raise prices. Price controls are a bad idea because it will lead to nothing being on the shelves. In winter in Ukraine, that's a bad thing. Sentence often heard in my principles classes: "All scarce goods are rationed; if you don't want to use price to ration, what do you want to use?" I hope dacha production of food was good this year. (One thing I remember from my time there was a stat by a U.S. Dept. of Agriculture specialist that 80% of potatoes grown in Ukraine were from dacha plots of land, like growing your vegetables at your lake cabin.)
