Also hard to get a medium rare hamburger in Oregon...

It seems to me that one effect of requiring an attendent to pump gasoline is to decrease the number of gas stations open late at night. For security reasons, it's better to have two people at a gas station with attenedents.

Self serve stations ususally one person in a locked booth.

I believe having far fewer stations open late at night discourages night time driving - it seemed that way to me while in Oregon this summer.

Less late night driving means fewer late night resturants, clubs, etc.

Less night time driving means fewer accidents, maybe less drunk driivng.

The results of intentional social engineering ?
