Six degrees of separation: How many have you? From 9/11, I mean. Not just you, Grainne, but anyone who cares to comment.

Let me explain: It is said that there are only six degrees of separation between any two persons on earth. That is, you know somebody--that's one degree of separation. That somebody knows somebody else--that's two degrees. And so forth, until the last person on earth is connected to you through only six degrees of separation.

There are only two degrees of separation between me and 25 victims of the attack on the World Trade Center. My brother-in-law's father, with whom I am acquainted (one degree), worked in the Towers until his retirement in 1995. He knew 25 people (two degrees) who perished.

I venture to say that nobody in the United States is more than three, or certainly four, degrees away from victims of 9/11.

Does anybody want to discuss this, or is it just too painful? Either way, I understand.
