So to show people that killing is wrong, you have society kill people.

Yes, exactly. All societies have to do that at times. Police carry weapons to kill those who present an immediate threat to the lives of others. Law-abiding citizens are allowed to kill in self-defense of their own lives. Capital punishment is just another way of demonstrating that society has zero tolerance for the crime of murder.
