When the state kills it is killing as an example. That is one reason, deterrence, but it is not the most important to me (I've stated my main reason). But the state, an instrument of society, does take lives other than through capital punishment. What about society's choice to take the lives of unborn infants? On the one hand we are talking about the most depraved and worthless of beings (death row) and on the other hand, beings in the purest state of innocence about to begin new life. It baffles me how some people can care so much for the former,and care little or nothing about the latter. Do you call that "reverence for life?" The term "irony" comes to mind.
