The first sentence I ever learned in first year Latin was Agricola est in aqua (the farmer is in the water).

Well, that sounds somewhat more useful that the first sentence of Greek that I learned -- something that went roughly like, "Oh Captain, that ship sails to Salamis!" (unfortunately, I can't transcribe the Greek for you, but I doubt SI has the font set required for typing in Classical Greek anyhow. I believe that the only Latin I ever got 'round to reading were some rather devilish and somewhat naughty poems by Catullus. (o:
