Obviously these Greeks and Romans were water-obsessed peoples.

Well, judging by some of my own readings, I'd say they were more than "water-obsessed".

I believe I've written this way back on DAR somewhere, but quite a number of years ago, while searching through images of Greek pottery that contained themes common to Etruscan tomb art, I came across some absolutely outrageous drinking bowls -- those flat, wide bowls used for drinking wine at parties. The decorative figures of Satyrs and Maenads painted on the bowls were -- well...certainly cavorting in the most interesting ways. I was sitting in the library flipping through this big tome, and when I flipped to this page, I let out a rather shocked LOL -- not that they were all that shocking, but more unexpected than anything. Everyone sitting nearby looked up and stared at me for several seconds. Most embarrassing. <g>

So, yes, never let it be said that those Greeks and Romans were a dull lot. Far from it.
