Higher education is one of our biggest exports. The University near me, Johns Hopkins has at least one third Asian students. Johns Hopkins will cost you around 35k a year with tuition and room & board. We have an enormous number of private institutions of higher learning competing for an ever smaller pool of top notch American born students. The schools whose marketing brochures I've worked on (about 200) are increasingly going after foreign students to fill the gap in their math, engineering, chemistry and physics programs. The one thing that might limit this trend is that I heard a recent rumor that the president of Hopkins was complaining bitterly that the new rules governing visas post 9/11 have made it difficult to impossible for some of his best candidates to get visas.
