>>The tales of rugged terrain that abound from the Goldrush days make you wonder. The reverse is true in most places - flatish ground, and smallish trees.<<

Well the Yukon does have some beautiful rugged mountains and large lakes, but I guess I'll keep that a secret.

>>Iffen the fed guvmint kills placer mining as they are trying to do desperately, it seems, then they will decimate the Yukon's population.<<

Fifty percent of the Yukon population is dependent on placer mining? Are you serious? I know the sediment rules are controversial, but placer miners in Alaska comply by using settling ponds. Seems to me the rising price of gold should help make complaince affordable.

>>The DFO premise is that the in stream placer miners in the YK River are adding sediment load which will affect fish habitat. If they haven't done this in 105 years, why will it suddenly affect the fish now? The reality is the sediment load of the YK cannot be exceeded.<<

Are they really placer mining in the Yukon River itself? Or is it the tributaries? BTW, the headwaters of the Yukon River are clear.

>>Not one of them has more than a passing acquaintance with what they are talking about since all they know about the hinterland is what they read in colouring books they stole from their older sister's room when they were allegedly growing up.<<

Nice rant, but the presevationists I know would have been more likely to cut some hair off their older sister's doll to make trout flies.
