I don't remember either creches or the Ten Commandments in public places either. I grew up in a very ethnic small town in NJ and visited relatives in Pa. There was a magnificent nativity display at a Moravian church in Bethlehem, Pa. or thereabouts that people came from miles around to visit each year. High school kids used to decorate the store windows on Main Street of my home town for various holidays and there were prizes for the best ones. The Christmas decorations were all of the ho-ho-ho variety. I doubt that there was any prohibition against religious decorations but it probably never occurred to anyone to put them on a store window. Why would you? The high school glee club did sing religious Christmas songs but no one thought anything about it best I recall. There are some very beautiful religious Christmas songs.

I don't recall any issues about Christmas. Of course, back then the Christmas season didn't start until around a week before Christmas...
