Thanks for all of these links. I can see I'll have some serious reading to do! Spent a little while this morning reading part of Buffalo Bird Woman's Garden -- the part about growing sunflowers and about making sunflower balls as wayfarer's food. Interesting!

Here's one of my favourite websites for finding books, documents, etc. from the National Library of Canada. This should be the link to the search page. The search engine works quite well. Lots of old pioneer and exploration-type accounts in this archive.
