There's a commercial on TV now that plays a tune that unfortunately keeps getting stuck in my head. It's for some electronics store or product. It has a very multi-ethnic ensemble singing "Happy Christma-hana-kwanza" and includes lyrics about agnostics and Scientologists and gays and whatever. Whenever I see it I wonder if that offends any of those who think this season should be all about Christ. I respond with "Merry Christmas" when someone says that to me. I say Happy Holidays or Happy Whatever when initiating the transaction. Re "Merry Christmas," "Merry" is a decidedly unreligious word. It's about frolic. Should be "Joyous" or "Blessed" or maybe even "Happy." I scratch my head when the Christ-centric celebrants defend "Merry Christmas" as being religious. It conjures up visions of jingle bells to me, not baby Jesus.
