I scratch my head when the Christ-centric celebrants defend "Merry Christmas" as being religious. It conjures up visions of jingle bells to me, not baby Jesus.

Knowing some deeply religious types, I can tell you their offended by the crass commercialization of Christmas and the resultant removal of religion from the holiday. To understand their pain, imagine how Muslims or Jews would react to similar commercialization by Madison Ave and others. Happy Ramadan anyone?

Today's secular society (in the US) is built off of a Christian base. Devout Christians are offended by discussion of 'X'mas that deletes its roots. They are also offended by secular attempts to accommodate other religions while neglecting the one this society morphed from.
