We need to respect these people in the same way that we respect other cultures.

We are "in fundamental agreement" on that, too.

Respecting other cultures is a fine concept. Applying it is not always simple. Respect works best when it is mutual or when the cultures have enough separation so they don't get in each other's hair. In this situation that is problematic because that very culture insists that only purist Christmas be practiced by non-purists be they Christians, of other religions, or secular. Respect means that we can each do our own thing without interference or scorn.

We can each do our own thing together in the public square or we can do it separately within our own families or sub-communities. I have trouble envisioning how this respect can play out when one of the cultures insists that the entire public square be purist. Respect can only play out if they accept a mixed public square (either shoulder to shoulder or time sliced) or keep to themselves out of the public square. I cannot envision any way to do it their way and have it work for everyone. I'm fine with respecting their religion and I'm fine with respecting their culture. But I'm not fine with submitting to either. They have to respect other religions and other cultures, too.

I'm prepared to negotiate on ways to share the public square. Are they? I have not heard any proposals.
