You were lucky but I have seen more accidents with sharp axes in the last few years. One guy was chopping firewood at our camp and hit his running shoe straight on with a razor sharp axe and it went half-way up his foot. Another time a summer student fell on her axe and it popped a right finger clean off - she had the presence of mind to put the finger in a sandwich bag and then later on ice and the doctors reattached it. The first thing they asked her is "do you smoke?" she did but said no - I guess if you smoke here they won't bother trying to reattach appendages. Another time a geologist took an axe from a native guy and said "here boy, let me show you how to swing that thing" he wound up like a golfer at a two inch sapling and the axe with a 2 1/2 lb head went clear around and imbedded itself in his left calf.
