Why do you think the United States supports Israel? The Republicans are probably even stronger in supporting Israel than the Democrats. Yet, usually over 80% of American Jews vote routinely for the Democratic Party. My guess is that over 80% of campaign dollars from Jewish Americans go to the Democratic Party as well. So its not pandering for votes or money (at least for Republicans).

A bit of history, before the United States strongly came out for Israel (in 1970), American companies controlled the worlds largest oil fields (and they were nationalized as a direct result of American support of Israel during the Yom Kippur War).
