I didn't mean to imply the lizard story isn't true, by calling it a tale. I'm more interested in how Lysenko sneaks in whenever we hear of something "responding" to a new environment. Organisms can't "adapt" or "respond" to new environments. They merely die off, and if there exists a beneficial variation within the gene pool, that variant survives to reproduce. But there is no explanation of how beneficial mutations occur. The original lizards would have carried the variant genes in their gene pool, and they would become differentiated over time. But this is just microevolution, like we do in breeding dogs. It's not a new species.
