"Unfairness" is an immutable aspect of the human condition. When we exit the womb, we are dealt a hand in the grand scheme of genetics and environment, anywhere from deuces to aces.

Gnashing teeth over the unfairness won't get us anywhere. Nor will misplaced sympathy, which is really a form of condescension as to the ability of people to make something out of whatever cards they are dealt.

I'm a big believer in personal responsibility. A lot of kids who get in trouble are very street-wise about their juvenile status and the law (e.g., "I'm underage and they can't touch me"). I'd rather stick with the message that "Whatever you do will remain on your record for the rest of your life."

I would call it tough love.
