Application Layer Security Features Allow Leading Innovator in Procurement Business-Process Outsourcing to Implement Secure Web-Based Automated Order Entry System

CANTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 7, 2004-- Network Engines, Inc. (NASDAQ: NENG), a leading OEM appliance partner for Microsoft security solutions, today announced that Xpress Source, an innovator in procurement business process outsourcing, has deployed Network Engines' NS6300 Firewall Appliance to provide application-layer security for its new web-based automated order entry system. The NS6300 Firewall Appliance is developed by Network Engines and powered by Microsoft® Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004.

Faced with the challenge of reducing operational costs while expanding the number of customers it could serve, Xpress Source developed a web-based automated order entry application, giving clients the convenient option of placing orders online rather than by phone. Because its existing firewall appliance did not provide application-layer security, Xpress Source recognized the need for a more secure firewall solution to safeguard internal systems when it published the order entry application to the Internet. After a thorough evaluation of leading firewall options, Xpress Source selected Network Engines' NS 6300 Firewall Appliance, primarily because of application-layer security and ease of management features. Once installed, Xpress Source recognized an immediate ROI in terms of increased customer service capability and reduced demand on staff.

"Aside from the fifteen minutes that it took to get the appliance in full production, we have seen significant reductions in transaction labor to the point where we can redeploy resources to handle other tasks," said Xpress Source system engineer, Brian Woodall. "When you can instantly increase business volume without increasing overhead, and do it all in a more secure fashion than before, that's a win-win situation for everybody. Through our deployment of Network Engines' NS6300 Firewall Appliance, we have been able to do exactly that."

The Network Engines NS6300 is a third-generation, application-layer firewall, SSL / VPN, and web cache appliance based on a full-featured version of Microsoft Internet and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004. The NS6300 combines ease of implementation and maintenance with exceptional security and performance. This compact and flexible solution delivers a comprehensive feature set including powerful application layer firewall capabilities to defend Microsoft business applications.

"Many organizations today are faced with the challenging task of doing more with less, to optimize operational expenditures while simultaneously increasing revenue," said John Curtis, CEO, Network Engines. "We are very pleased that NS6300 Firewall Appliance could play a pivotal role in helping Xpress Source improve operations and take their business to the next level."
