I take it from Bathi'ist doctrine and Saddam's speeches, and the intelligence that he was expanding his weapons programs.

I noted that I originally wrote this before the invasion. At that time, given the intelligence on WMDs, and the possibility of a sneak attack that did not stop at Kuwait, my observation about taking over the Arabian peninsula was quite correct. Remember, I did not think containment would last. I said in this piece:"Suppose that there were a concerted series of biochemical attacks on our troops in the region? How long before there was a call to withdraw them, leaving Saddam with a free hand?"

I was not talking about Iraq and North Korea, I was talking about the oft repeated nonsense that Al Qaid and Iraq could never cooperate. If the Nazis could work with the Communists, anything is possible.

We go in with guns blazing on the basis of surmises, because we cannot tolerate the terrorists hiding in the shadows. But that is not deterrence, that is reaching the end of one's rope.
