I just got back from lunch. I had a kabob and picked up some kalamata olives and sumac at a Middle Eastern market with an attached cafe. The people who own the place are Lebanese, I think, which means they're likely Christian unlike my two other regular kabob joints, one of which is owned by Iranians and the other by Arabs of unknown nationality. They had Christmas music playing as I ate my lunch, read a book, and people watched. Many of the patrons were obviously Muslim. The rest, who knows? A pair of Muslim women were laughing together as they left with bags of groceries unperturbed by the Christmas music. As was I. I wouldn't have thought about any of it had we not had this discussion here today. Maybe most people aren't used to the sort of environment where disparate folks mix easily. Regardless of the ease, it's not the sort of place where you say "Merry Christmas" as you pass other shoppers in the aisles.
