Got a consumer info brochure today from one of the most (if not THE most experienced) LVC site in Canada, London Place Eye Centre.
In it, they interview Franette Armstrong, author of "BEYOND GLASSES! The Consumer's Guide to Laser Vision Correction".
Here's an excerpt from the interview:
Q: "Your book examines all techniques thoroughly but seems to lean toward PRK as the safest and most effective procedure for laser vision correction?"
F.A.: "I don't think the book leans toward any one procedure, but definitely the EVIDENCE does, and many doctors do. There are doctors who will tell you that procedures like LASIK are better than PRK, but there are no long-term studies to back them up, and early results from the few studies being conducted indicate that LASIK might not be as effective and can cause serious complications in the best of hands. PRK has been proven safe and effective in years of clinical trials and is the only procedure that has not caused a single major eye problem in over a million cases so far."
F.A.: "Media reports usually contain significant error or bias because they rely on single sources and don't know what questions to ask. In addition, if I had been a doctor, you would have heard only my own views. Instead, my book contains the opinions and experiences of many of the world's pioneer surgeons in the field- it's the next best thing to having private consultations with all of them."
All you LASIK fans should read the book, especially you, Yosid. |
