My non-expert take:

Registered memory is mainly for servers that need huge banks of memory. ecc memory has an extra bit per byte that is used for error checking. It's a matter of philosophy and kind of use whether ecc is needed—if you don't know what ecc is you probably don't need it. So, non-ecc and non-registered DDR should be fine but make sure your motherboard specifically supports the type you buy. I buy from Crucial, because they're usually very competitive pricewise, they make good memory and put it on their own modules, and you are sure to get a compatible type. I'll pay a few extra bucks to avoid hassles down the road.
