Our minutemen fought to expel a colonial power. It's hard to understand, but many Iraqi Sunnis see themselves as fighting to expel a foreign power and topple an imposed government that took away their dominant status in Iraq.

Because Sunnis are a minority, they fear Shiite majority candidates will easily win the election, cementing the new Sunni second-class status.

I truly hope you're right and I'm wrong. One of the candidates for President has family and tribal roots in both the Sunni and Shiite camps - and married a Kurd - so it is possible he or someone else may persuade exhausted Iraqis that, yes, Iraqis can live as one nation. Call me a pessimist, but for many reasons I just don't see that happening.
