Santiago, Chile — During his visit here last month, President Bush pointed out that the Chilean pension model was a "great example" for Social Security reform in the United States.

Great oped! I'm all for turning SS over to private accounts, but its that transition that's a bitch. Chile maintained a temporary payroll tax and "saved its pennies" for the crunch. I don't think its feasible for the US to pinch pennies enough to pull it off this decade. Not with us wrapped up in an expensive, long-term fight. Maybe if we get another breather like the 90s. Still, its very encouraging to see that someone else has pulled off the switch succeessfully.
