According to an Irish friend, the conflict in Ireland is 95% of the Irish people wanting to have the right to govern themselves, and get out from under the suffocating thumb of
England.

Let me guess . . . . your friend is Catholic. Because the Protestants don't want "out from under the suffocating thumb of England," and they form the majority in Northern Ireland. There is another country just south of Northern Ireland, named "Ireland," which is majority Catholic, and got "out from under the suffocating thumb of England" just a few decades ago. Independent in 1921, left the British Commonwealth 1948.
