I totally agree. Without Rummie and his "slim approach" (=lower cost...) desktop theory approach to the Iraq attack, the Powell doctrine probably would have prevailed:

Enough troops had been lined up ready to move in after the first wave to fill the void of Iraq military and police forces taken off duty. Furthermore the existing Iraq security forces would have been recycled and kept in office.
Thus the bad "Fundamentalist" driven guys would have been repelled when trying to move in (Tejek, I am improving, right? Didn't say "Muslim"...).

A main problem with Bush: he had some great and some lousy advisors. Just like Reagan. The difference: Bush decided to listen to the wrong ones where Reagan proved his statesmanship talent by picking the right ones and trusting them. Other than that, none was any brighter than Kerry IMHO. But Reagan was smarter and that takes him to history as a truly great man.
