I see your point. However, consider this: Suppose the Russians invaded the USA to prevent Bush from deploying a missile defense system - thereby making the US invulnerable to attack and, in Russian eyes, able and likely to attack Russia without fear of retaliation. That's a reach, I know, but stay with me...
Now, the Russians somehow win. That's absurd, but I'm returning to earh soon, so hang on...
The Russians then abolished the armed forces and outlawed the Republican party and fired all government employees - police, firemen, teachers - anyone who had ties to the Republican party. They then recruited Democrats and others to form a new army and police and fill other government posts.
I'm not saying Republicans would start murdering Democrats, but when your country has been destroyed, people killed left and right, you've lost your job and your house is being taken away, even though you were apolitical and were a Republican in name only, I think you'd be ticked off and not adverse to tossing a few Molotov cocktails at anyone who cooperated with the Russians.
Even the Democrats who got the new jobs might not feel good about the situation, the unrest, the turning upside down of society - and, hey, they had some Republican friends. When the Republicans started a fight over the police station, why fight? Scram... and let the Russians deal with the Republicans.
This is an exaggeration, of course, but how far is it from reality in Iraq? Toss religion into the mess and...
If the people in your town (especially the police or groups organized to insure security) were being stalked and brutally murdered by organized groups or individuals, I would presume the people of your town would unite to find and remove those threats. |
