Auto production began to accelerate at the end of WW I in the US. Back then, Britain usually preceded us by a few years. By the 1920s, millions of cars were being produced world wide. Those cars didn't run on hay.

The petrol politics didn't happen until after WW II. Until then ME political policies were determined by other means

Why did France and Britain carve up the ME in 1917 I believe? France got Syria and Lebanon and Britain got Iraq and Palestine. Egypt was already under the control of Brit. and they tried to get control of Saudi Arabia. If oil was not the issue, what was? Desert sand? Palm dates? Camels? Bedouins?
