I do not own either of the satellite broadcasters mentioned in these posts. After reading your post along with those on other boards who have pumpers and slammers, I came to the conclusion that a lot of you say things which can not be proven one way or the other. Hence many virtual shouting matches and personal vituperations. I don't often see in these posts "IMHO" or like caveats.
In your particular post, I question your assertions as to;
1) The number of Stern listeners(did you get this from latest arbs?);
2) The number of current "free" Stern hard core listeners who will pay $13.00 per month plus buy a unit just to hear a radio "host", "jock", "pundit" or whatever (or did you just presume a million or so listeners are just like you? Or, has someone done an actual poll?);
3) That other content really does not matter in a competitive environment. Just what is the market segment comprised of? What are the options for LISTENERS of music, talk shows, NPR, CNN, Foxnews, et. al. That would seem to be a question which transends cult status "heroes" like Stern, Limbaugh, O'Reilley and Hannity.
I would like to have one thing added here. Satellite radio, Broadcast radio and standard TV are all unidirectional. The web with the advent of very fast broadband (fiber, cable, DSL,BPL, wireless, etc.) can be/is bidirectional and likely to overtake one direction broadcast systems. When satellite bidirectional high speed web access is available, a lot of current equipment and providers of broadcast services will be made obsolete.
I can already sit outside on the beach at Kaanapali with my laptop and headset and listen "live" to WLS, Chicago or KSDO, San Diego. There are already many interactive audio and Video sources. I can even watch selected video clips from CNBC/Marketwatch right on the beach.. Perhaps better in the shade.
My INVESTMENT will be in those companies who will have a good chance of making a "PROFIT" from delivering the bidirectional audio/visual on-demand content. BTW, with "Replay Radio" and other like programs on the internet, I can fall asleep and laptop battery power allowing, record the entire content onto my hard drive for later listening.
It is really hard for me to get excited about SIRI or XSMR at this point. These are plays for day traders.
