I have absolutely no idea why anyone would go out of their way to create laws to make sure that juvenile arrests stay on your record for life. How draconian! I cannot fathom how someone would acknowledge that life is unfair and then proceed to make it MORE unfair by advocating such a law.

Yes, it is true that some juveniles are savvy about the law. So? Does that justify locking them up and throwing away the key? Incarcerating an even larger percentage of Americans? Ensuring that teenagers who have made silly teenaged mistakes go into adult life with a criminal record, so that they can be less successful and more at risk?

I am pretty sure that the social cost of your idea of social engineering does not occur to you. Perhaps you live, work and play in a gated community, and therefore have no real stake in healthy, employable citizens. Regardless of what you say, what I am hearing is a really smug and elitist world view that does not solve problems or show compassion or help people grow and change. I have no idea how anyone could really justify feeling that way.

A lot of kids who get in trouble have really bad parents, go to bad schools, don't get enough to eat, etc. Personal responsibility? Hah! It is everyone's responsibility to help them. Rather than tough love (which can kill children) why don't we just love them and try to guide them into a hopeful future? Surely we can afford to.
