Hi GST

I think most reasonable Americans feel discomfort with the trauma in Iraq, but there is still the mist of hope that things will go better. We are not an evil nation. What the landscape looks like after the mist clears nobody can say at this time.

For people who have had some direct experience with nations seeking there own destiny there is less hope that externally forced solutions, or solutions which are seen as alien in some important sense (racial, religious) will work, even if those solutions clearly hold the promise of being more optimal for reasons of equality or economics or world peace or whatever. I am one such person.

Determination, blood, sweat and tears can carry the day however and guys like neocon may yet be vindicated. If peace, prosperity and democracy blossom in Iraq, then the pain of this war will be accepted by Iraqis and I for one will be most happy for them. I will also admit that Bush & Co. should get a Nobel peace price for it.

My brain tells me this is not likely though, and that other strategies are needed. It could be that in February, other options will look more desirable to more people. I don't know.
