STU DUCKLOW Police apprehend a naked man outside city hall in Halifax on Tuesday afternoon. The man has been taken to hospital for a psychiatric assessment. The man likely won't face any charges, police said
A man bared all at Halifax city hall Tuesday, removing all his clothes and dancing in cold afternoon air in the Grand Parade before police hauled him away.
The incident started at about 1:30 p.m. when a dark-haired, bearded man who looked to be about six feet tall and in his 20s began undressing near the flagpole in the downtown square.
Harry Carrigan, a commissionaire doing security work at city hall, got a call about the man from someone in the mayor's office.
"By the time I got over to the front door, he had all his clothes off, down beside the flagpole," Mr. Carrigan said.
"He was down there doing all sorts of dance movements and all this, bare, buff, right down to nothing."
Mr. Carrigan called police and one officer responded quickly. However, the cop couldn't handle the man, who started running around the square to avoid capture.
"There was not much to grab hold of," Mr. Carrigan said. "He had no clothes on."
Eventually, more police arrived, and four or five officers surrounded the man, took him to the ground and handcuffed him. The man was screaming by then.
In all, the man was naked in the park for about 20 minutes, Mr. Carrigan said.
Police took the man to a van, but he started kicking at the doors, according to witnesses. Eventually, police moved him to another, more secure van.
Matthew Warman, a Sagittarius Security worker inside a nearby TD Bank, saw the man battle with police near the Grand Parade's exit on Barrington Street.
"I saw four cops drag the guy towards the back of the car," he said.
"He was fighting pretty hard. It took a lot of strength for them to get him to the back of the paddy wagon."
Halifax Regional Police spokesman Sgt. Don Spicer said the man was taken to hospital for a psychiatric assessment and likely won't face any criminal charges. |
