It's easy to pick out one reason why he lost, when actually it was a bunch of reasons. I think the swifty thing was a turning point, he had some momentum then, and it left some people with a little less trust.

It was more than one issue, i am just mentioning the one against which he lost no matter what he did. If he fought back the swifties got more news, if he didn't, it seemed like implicit guilt. It sucks...but that's what they did.

Then the turning against the war in the primaries, to beat Dean, only to have to retreat later to close the gap with bush...opening himself up to more criticism.

The amazing thing is that he came as close to winning as he did against an incumbent. To me, this reveals about how poorly the bush is thought of.
