Neocon, re: Sure, it depends on lots of things. But once the mission is set, logically it is paramount.
The mission is never "set." Life is full of changes and learning. Those who consider missions as "set" are so conservative that they are doomed for wasteful and unnecessary failures.
When the articulated basis for the war was wrong, when the assumptions concerning what the Iraqis would fight for, or not fight against, are wrong, when the costs in human and monetary terms are escalating, when the situation is getting worse and when there's no good end in sight, then it's time to un"set" the mission.
I can picture Bush and Cheney leading a parade of fools toward a shear cliff while laughing at those who refuse to "stay the course." Unfortunately, given the fact that their party is in total control of the House, the Senate, the military (thanks to "retirements" of those who refused to play ball) and, some would argue, the courts, many of us have no way to turn away from the impending cascade off the edge.
Is that you I see out front; high stepping with that baton? If enough of you non critical believers go first you might create a softer landing for those of us reluctantly bringing up the rear. Lead on great sheep, lead on! Ed |
