John - Re: "As far as capital equipment goes, there are no "efficiencies of scale" beyond the FAB level. "

You are missing a very important point.

In the fab world, there are many manufacturers of wafer fabrication equipment. These companies all want to sell to the big dog on the porch - the one that will buy 5 of every machine they make - for each of five fabs (more if they require multiple pieces of equipment per fab line).

And when the big dog says he wants a piece of equipment modified, or built, to his specification, these companies DO IT!

So, who has the advantage in seeing new equipment, specialized equipment, and pricing (read - volume discounts)? It's the Big Dog.

Now, all you need to answer is - who's the Big Dog On The porch?
