It is arguably one of the greatest inventions of WWII: linear programming and its application to the field of logistics. Certainly the end of the USSR had a lot more to do with efficiency and the ability to move materiel. One of the biggest differences between now and when I was a kid is the availability of produce that it is off season, at low prices. One of the gifts people got in their stockings at Christmas was an orange! Be patriotic, buy local!
