Interesting quote today from Jeff Bezos: "Amazon is determined to be the best place to rent DVDs -- online or off."

I realize that Amazon wants to be the online leader in DVD rentals, but how will it become the offline leader?

When rumors of Amazon's entry first surfaced, I speculated that Amazon might end up partnering with Blockbuster. Amazon has a history of partnering with offline retailers such as Toys R Us and Borders. In addition, a partnership in the DVD rental space would be completely win-win. Amazon could use its IMDB technology to create a great website and leave the headache of distribution to Blockbuster. Blockbuster wins because it gets a great website. Amazon wins because it can leverage its existing technology to gain additional revenue.

Things are really coming together for Blockbuster. If a partnership happens, then Blockbuster's website will be on par with Netflix's. And once Blockbuster integrates in-store with online (1st quarter, 2005), you'll be able to (1) Get new releases at the store; (2) Get obscure movies mailed to you; (3) Return any DVD (online or in-store) back to the store instead of having to mail them back; (4) Immediately get additional DVDs, either in-store or online.

The next 6 months should be interesting. While Netflix has executed well, I don't see how it will be able to compete with an integrated product offering, especially if this integrated offering comes with an Amazon/IMDB website.
